Monty (S.C. Montgomery)

Fellow soldier / close friend
Mentioned: 1915–1917
McGill & friends from home

Samuel Clifford Montgomery: a fellow McGill Applied Science student (president of the Science Undergraduate Society) who enlisted alongside Robertson in February 1915, per a McGill student newspaper clipping (and a Montreal daily's fuller report of the send-off) announcing the departure of five Science undergraduates for the 21st Artillery. His service record has him as a gunner (regimental no. 85233) in the 6th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery (the same brigade Robertson's 21st Battery belonged to), with a Canadian Officers' Training Corps background noted, a birth date of 24 July 1893, and his next of kin given as Oswald Montgomery of Winnipeg. Part of Robertson's inner circle of roommates in 1915 and still turning up as a friend in early 1916, he reappears in the 1917 diary doing forward-observation work for the 26th Battery in the line near Bully-Grenay while Robertson was attached to the tunnellers.
