Where Things Stand

Two Leaves in Three Weeks

April 1915

Between a pass into London on the 9th and a much longer stay with his uncle's family from the 17th through the 21st, Robertson spends a striking amount of April away from camp, Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court, the Tower, shows and dinners most nights. It's more freedom than an ordinary private would see, but he isn't quite an ordinary private: he's on the officer track, training is still in its quieter pre-deployment phase, and, probably the real reason, he has family in London happy to host him. Even he seems to sense he's overdone it by the time he leaves: "Left London + a good thing too. - I couldn't have stood it much longer."

Where Things Stand

First Word From the Front

April 24, 1915

Bill's stories are the first unfiltered account of front-line conditions to reach the diary, not an official communiqué, just a returning soldier's own telling. Neuve Chapelle, fought a few weeks earlier in March, was one of the first deliberate British offensives of the war; the meningitis outbreak Bill describes was a real and serious hazard of overcrowded training camps in this period; and the loss of Pete Paddon to an accidental shooting is a stark reminder that danger in this war didn't require an enemy to be present. It's a different register entirely from Robertson's own tidy training-camp routine, his first real glimpse of what lies ahead.

Historical Context

The Second Battle of Ypres

April 22 – May 25, 1915

While Robertson finishes his training in England, this entry marks the moment the war turns for the Canadians overseas: German forces released chlorine gas at Ypres on April 22 – the first large-scale gas attack of the war, and the Canadian 1st Division held the line near St. Julien through some of the war's fiercest early fighting, at heavy cost. It's considered a defining moment for Canada's military reputation, and it's fought on ground, the Ypres Salient, that Robertson himself reaches the following spring.
