Fred Chidley

Second cousin (2nd Canadian Battalion)
Mentioned: 1915, 1916
Family & home

Philip Frederick Chidley ("Fred" to the family) a second cousin of the diarist's: the two shared great-grandparents in Andrew Murray and Isabella Amos. Andrew Murray's daughter Elizabeth Murray was Robertson's grandmother, and her brother George Murray was Chidley's grandfather. Born 27 May 1892 at Stratford, Ontario, a schoolteacher, he enlisted in the Canadian infantry (regimental no. 452364), served as a corporal in the 58th Battalion and then in the ranks of the 2nd, and was killed in action on 26 April 1916 at Hill 60, near Ypres; he is buried in Woods Cemetery. The "Fred Chidley killed" note on that day's diary entry was added later, in pencil, visibly different from the same-day ink, so the exact date Robertson learned of his death is uncertain.
