Vimy Ridge

Pas-de-Calais, France
Mentioned: 1916, 1917, 1918
Vimy / Artois Sector

First mentioned as a rumored destination on October 11, 1916 ("Whispers of Vimy Ridge"), then the Canadian Corps' actual arrival in the sector two weeks later, October 25 ("Arrival in the Vimy Sector"): both see those dates' context panels. The battle itself comes the following spring: all four Canadian divisions attacking together for the first time, on April 9, 1917 (see the "'W' Day: Counting Down to Vimy" (April 6) and "The Battle of Vimy Ridge" (April 9) context panels), and the several entries around them covering its aftermath. Kept here as a deliberate exception to this site's usual rule against ridges and other diffuse landforms, given its significance as the site of one named, historically defining battle, rather than an arbitrary unnamed feature.
