Sanctuary Wood

West Flanders, Belgium
Mentioned: 1916, 1917
Ypres / Belgium Sector

A wood in the Ypres Salient, still a preserved battlefield site today. Robertson walks through it in the summer of 1916 ("especially round Sanctuary Wood"... "up among the stiffs in Sanctuary Wood"), and recalls it a year later, July 3, 1917, as the site of a cramped "4' x 4'" dugout he once visited Major Critchley in.
