Moreuil

Somme, France
Mentioned: 1918
Somme Sector

A town on the Avre river in the Somme department, some 21 km south-east of Amiens. On August 14, 1918, in the days after the Amiens attack, Robertson goes "down to the river below" it for a swim and fraternises with the French. The diary spells the name "Maroeiul," the spelling he also uses for Maroeuil in Artois; the unit's war diary has it camped at Beaufort-en-Santerre, some 13 km east of Moreuil, that week (and the same day's Sopwith Camel crash near camp), so Moreuil on the Avre is the likeliest river for a swim but is not confirmed.
