Hendecourt-lès-Cagnicourt

Pas-de-Calais, France
Mentioned: 1918
Vimy / Artois Sector

A village in the Pas-de-Calais about 18 km south-east of Arras and some 6 km south-west of Dury. On September 10, 1918, after a shelling kills nine horses and wrecks his bivouac, Robertson "pulled back to Bde H.Q. at Hendicourt" and bivouacs there for the night; the next day's entry carries the name as its heading and records locating horse lines and dugout accommodation. The diary's spelling is "Hendicourt," confirmed against the scan as his own. Several villages share the name; Hendecourt-lès-Cagnicourt is the likely one, in the Dury area where his unit was that week.
