Woods (Lieut. H.G.J. Woods)
Subordinate, bridging unit
Mentioned: 1918
Comrades in the field Working the pontoons and heavy bridging material during the rapid advance toward Douai: taking material down "at the canter" on October 17, meeting Robertson with wagons to collect pontoons two days later, and moving them on to Roucourt that same day. Still with the unit November 9, "away off into the blue" as 2nd Bde. moves on Mons. The unit's war diary names him Lieut. H.G.J. Woods: he commanded the forward detachment of pontoons in October and November 1918 and wrote its own day-by-day diary, including the move up to Pâturages and the night before the Armistice (November 10 to 11), and the Canal de la Sensée crossing for the guns that Lieut.-Col. Rolston praised on October 21.
