Sutherland ("Waddy" Sutherland)
Fellow officer / friend
Mentioned: 1917 (possibly also 1915, see note)
Comrades in the field Nicknamed "Waddy." Major Brown gives Robertson his location in April 1917 (recently married, finished a course), and the two turn up together again at a big divisional dinner three weeks later ("Sutherland, Brown" among those present), the clearest evidence tying the surname to one consistent person through the rest of the summer: a day trip to Arras, visits to his own nearby billet, sharing a hut in late July. A "young Sutherland" met by chance in 1915, and a "Sutherland on leave from front" later that same year, may or may not be the same man: nothing in the text confirms or denies it, and it's treated here as a separate, unresolved question rather than merged in.
