Mitchell
Sergeant, bridging unit
Mentioned: 1918
Other ranks Read as Sergeant J.R. Mitchell of Robertson's own unit. On August 6, 1918 Robertson finds "Mitchell + his gang" at Boves Wood, where the unit's war diary has Sergt. Mitchell and sixteen sappers sent ahead by bus on August 5; on August 9 he is sent back to the dump to draw shovels, and the war diary has Sergt. Mitchell detailed with four sappers and two trestle wagons to haul shovels forward that day. The same day he "gave the S.M. a calling" for getting above himself, which is a sergeant's quarrel with the sergeant-major. He is awarded the Military Medal on September 25, 1918, and the war diary has a C.S.M. Mitchell in January 1919. (Earlier versions of this page took him for a fellow officer; the diary itself gives no initial or rank.)
