Capt. O.B. McCuaig
A Canadian Engineer officer, not to be confused with Lieut.-Col. G. Eric McCuaig, the 13th Battalion commander Robertson worked under in 1916–17. This McCuaig is a company officer of the 3rd Army Troops Company, Canadian Engineers: on May 17, 1917, following the promotion order on his kept seniority list, Robertson notes that "McCuaig is running the 3rd A.T. Co'y & as he is next on the list will probably get his step"; on February 4, 1918 he "walked over to 3rd A.T. to see McCuaig & have tea." He is among the Military Crosses in the New Year 1918 list published in the Times, alongside Ormie Stitt. Through that winter and the following spring he is a fixture of Robertson's off-duty circle: dinner with Simmy and Melville in December 1917, New Year's Day 1918 at his camp in the Bois des Alleux, tea, tennis and a borrowed side-car in May and June 1918. Robertson writes the name "McCuaig" throughout, and three times in May 1918 "Macuaig." The pencil-annotated Corps seniority list he kept, corrected May 8, 1917, lists a Captain "McCuaid, O.B." of the 3rd A.T. Coy., seniority date December 7, 1915; the same initials and company, but a different last letter. The surname is McCuaig: the 3rd Army Troops Company's war diary for at least October to December 1917 is written up by O.B. McCuaig, so "McCuaid" is an error on the list.
