July 9th ‘18

Hello, old thing,

Here we are again, just going to dust off the odd line in answer to yours of the 31-5-18. –

Glad to know you fine enough to do in the way of Red Crossing to keep you out of mischief.

– I have been as busy as the proverbial hen myself lately. – Think I told you that I was due to leave the cushy home I had at the rail-head. – I left there a month ago and it was just as well I did, for within twelve hours of my departure, Fritz blew the kitchen clean off the mess with his long range gun.

– I now have a little unit of my own to handle, and of course am frightfully stuck up about it. – They call me "The Admiral" now as I command the Divisional Bridging Unit and my equipment consists largely of pontoons, which they call "the fleet". –

– The name of my unit is rather lengthy and complicated to the civilian ear so I'll give you a simpler address to write to:

"℅ Headquarters, 1st Canadian Divisional Engineers, B.E.F. France"

We have been having a series of Sports Days lately that have given me a bit of work as a lot of my bridging equipment comes in very handy for the erection of temporary grandstands. – On Dominion Day we put on a show that made the Olympic games look like a county fair. –

– I had 200 yds of bridge constructed as a grandstand, as well as a number of private boxes for the G.O.C. and his guests. – A crowd of nurses were brought up from the base hospital in motors for the games up so it had quite the air of civilisation about it. – Believe me it's a trial to meet a girl now and then who talks your own language. – I fell madly in love with a dear little V.A.D. muse from Vancouver, but a crusty old Brigadier came along and cut me out. – Crushed again!

– Just the same I'm, going to take a run down to the coast one of these days with a pal of mine in the Flying Corps and visit some of the little dears down there where there won't be such a crowd. – It's [rest of letter missing]
