Beaufort-en-Santerre
Somme, France
Mentioned: 1918
Somme Sector A village about 25 km south-east of Amiens, in the Santerre country the Canadian Corps advanced over in the Amiens offensive. Robertson's unit (the 1st Bridging and Transport Section, Canadian Engineers) camped in an open field west of the village from August 11 to 19, 1918, in the old German lines: hot, dusty, short of water, with horse lines cut into a light-railway cutting for protection against bombing, and enemy aircraft over at night. The unit's war diary places it here; Robertson's own diary of August 11 breaks off at "located lines just outside B", which this identifies as Beaufort.
