Comrades in the field Named twice in December 1917, both times without a surname. On December 11, paired directly with Hertzy's own promotion ("Hertzy is going to be C.R.E. 1st... Sandy is going to be C.R.E. 5th"), a divisional Commander Royal Engineers appointment. Echoed again on December 28 ("if Pep is going back with Sandy"), which reuses the same "going back" language from the same conversation two weeks earlier: plausible, not proven, to be the same occasion. A separate "Sandy McPhail," on ordinary 30-day home leave in September, is a different, more junior figure.
