Ralph Lee Alexander Strathy, M.C.: "Lee Strathy" in the diary. Born 18 September 1892, a McGill man serving as an artillery observation officer. Robertson names him alongside Walter Hyde in an October 1916 McGill Daily letter, "looking for material to keep out Fritz's scrap iron," and again in the diary on January 29, 1917, among a group of gunners at Battalion headquarters. His Military Cross, gazetted 1 November 1916, was for an action at his observation post on 15 September 1916, during the Flers–Courcelette battle: a German bombing attack killed his three telephonists and wounded him, but he took command of the infantry nearby, shot three of the enemy with his revolver, and got back to the support line to give the alarm before his wound kept him from returning.
