McGill & friends from home Heber William Dawson: a McGill man expected at Shorncliffe "shortly," per Robertson's own October 1915 McGill Daily letter, who duly turns up in the diary that November. Born 6 December 1892, he was commissioned into the Canadian Engineers in April 1916 and served through to demobilization in August 1919 as a signals officer (with the 2nd and 1st Divisional Signal Companies, the Canadian Engineers Training Depot, G.H.Q. Canadians, and the Canadian Corps Signalling Company), finishing the war a captain. Not the "Dawson" of the 1917–18 diary (see Dawson), a different man.
