McGill & friends from home

A fellow McGill man: Fisher enrolled there in 1912 to study engineering, and was born August 3, 1894, just sixteen days after Robertson's own July 18, 1894, making them almost exact contemporaries who likely crossed paths on campus before the war. He enlisted earlier, though, with the 13th Battalion's original 1914 contingent, and was killed at the Second Battle of Ypres on April 23, 1915. Robertson records the news himself a month later, on May 24 (in both diaries that day, and, in the main one, right beside his own reaction): "Feel just rotten myself. Fred Fisher's name amongst killed." Fisher was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Ypres, the first Canadian of the war to receive it.
