Dear Doris,
Your letter of Jan 15th arrived about three weeks ago but haven't been able to answer it till now as I have been in hospital since Feb 26th when a bosche sniper plugged me thru the neck. – I had my luck right with me for the bullet entered just below my right ear and came out at the back, just grazing the spine. – A shade more and I should have been paralysed if not done in entirely.
As it is I am really having a tophole time. – This is one of the nicest hospitals in France. – It is run by the Duchess of Westminster who does everything to make the patients comfortable.
As for the sisters and nurses they are absolutely priceless. – Not being confined to bed I get around a good bit and as this is quite a seaside resort in peacetimes, it's not a bad place to lay up. – There is a ripping golf course not far off – One of the nurses took me over for a round last Sunday. – Do you play at all? –
There are about 200 patients in the hospital. – All officers. About 50% are wounded and the others sick. – Some are bad, others worse. – Chap in next bed just had his leg off. – He was suffering a good bit, it had been pretty well shattered. I don't fancy that this hospital news will interest you and anyhow I have to stop and have my neck dressed so will say Au revoir.
